Summerfield Mission

Summerfield UMC spans 160 years of life and history in Milwaukee. It is the oldest Methodist congregation in the state. Goodwill Industries of Wisconsin was started with the support of Summerfield Members in the basement of the present-day church location.

The ministries of Summerfield go beyond the church walls with strong participation in the Interchange Food Pantry, East Side Senior Services, and the Northcott Neighborhood House.

Our pastor, Jennifer Emert, personally invites you to come visit Summerfield. Be a part of this special community. We want you with us. We want you with us today on this spiritual journey.

Everyone is welcome here.

Summerfield is a place of community, hospitality, and healing. Many people feel it is hard to fit in at church because they are not good enough to attend, or do not connect with the established social status. Or maybe they are too liberal, too conservative, too single, too gay, too young, too old, too broken, too foreign, or have too many noisy kids. We are open and accepting, just come as you are.

Summerfield makes waking-up on Sunday mornings a worthwhile effort. We are blessed with talented people, a beautiful building, great music, and heart-felt worship. After our devotion we share in fellowship over coffee and refreshments. And our connection to members and the community goes beyond the Sunday service.

The Mission Statement of Summerfield

We Affirm these teachings of Jesus: unconditional love, compassion and justice.
We Believe all persons are of sacred worth and loved unconditionally by God. Therefore, we welcome all persons of any age, race, gender identity, ethnic origin, economic reality, family status, sexual orientation, diverse ability, faith history or social standing as full and equal participants in the life and work of this reconciling congregation.
We Commit ourselves to making inclusiveness, equality and mutual respect a reality in this congregation, this community and this world.

Strong – Diverse – Connected

“Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:10-11
