On Saturday, May 3rd, Summerfield UMC will launch two new computer labs.

The first will be in support of our Meal Outreach. This technology will allow the needy of Milwaukee to utilize resources that they normally have limited access to, such as job searches, connecting with family via eMail, and exploring educational opportunities.

The second is the Samuel Fallows Multimedia Center at Summerfield UMC. It is a research and computer lab that is open to the public, offering digital and print resources. These materials reinforce Summerfield ministries, such as audio sermon series, Bible commentaries, concordances and reference materials, as well as literature about Christian living.

We would like to thank our partners Project: Community Computers for their donation of equipment and training. We are grateful for their support.

http://www.projectcc.org | https://www.facebook.com/projectcomcomp

Project: Community Computers Reducing e-waste through education and charity

Project:CC is a group which recycles old computers and reduces e-waste by reloading them with Open Source Software and donating the computers to communities in need.

Project:CC is based out of Milwaukee but we have donated computers and set up labs around Wisconsin and the developing world. Our Milwaukee School of Engineering Student Chapter is currently our most active group.

Now all computer or monetary donations are tax-deductible.

We always work with other non-profits and community groups to have a sustainable way of providing technology to those who wouldn’t otherwise have it.

Everyday, thousands of functional computers are sent to the landfill. Sadly, most of the computers are still usable, just maybe not for their initial intended purpose in business or education. Project Community Computers takes these computers that are deemed useless by their purchasers, fixes them up and distributes them to people in need who can’t afford a new computer. We then educate the recipient on how to use the computer, thus reducing e-waste through education and charity.

Cappuccino Service: 9:00 a.m. Sunday

A very casual worship service focusing on conversation, scripture and prayer. Sit at a table and drink coffee, and get to know people. No music, no sermon, no communion. Great for those new to church or not comfortable with traditional worship. Also makes a great Adult Sunday School Class for folks who want to stay for the 10:30 a.m. service.

[ Hand-Out used for Service Format ]

Worship Service: 10:30 a.m. Sunday
Traditional service in the sanctuary that blends different styles and traditions. Includes music, sermon, and periodically communion. An opportunity to celebrate God’s work in our lives. The message from this worship service is also published as a weekly podcast. Stay for the coffee fellowship hour immediately after this service on Sunday.

Evening Worship: 6:11 p.m. Saturday

6:11 is a reference to 2 Corinthians 6:11 “We speak freely to you. Our heart is wide open.” This service follows immediately after our Meal Outreach program, to include those folks as well as people from our neighborhood for whom a 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship time is not convenient. The style is contemporary, celebratory, open, and genuine. All are welcome to attend.

We believe that technology is a vital tool for spreading the Good News of Jesus and sharing this love with our local community.

Summerfield UMC has combined it numerous technology-based initiatives into a formal ministry. A generation ago, knowledge was obtained only from books. To see the world meant getting on a plane, or at least waiting for a picture postcard in the mail. Today, the internet has transformed the computer into a tiny portal that connects to a vast social network of people and information.

Understanding this need, we have established two computer labs. The Summerfield UMC Meal Outreach Computer Lab, and the Samuel Fallows Multimedia Center at Summerfield UMC. This technology will allow the needy of Milwaukee to utilize resources that they normally have limited access to, such as job searches, connecting with family via eMail, and exploring educational opportunities. Plus, it offers multimedia and print resources, such as audio sermon series, Bible commentaries, concordances, and literature about Christian living.

We would like to thank our partners Project: Community Computers for their donation of equipment and training. We are grateful for their support.

Summerfield renovated its historic Sanctuary at the beginning of 2013. Removing the century-old lime mortar, reinforced with horsehair, was a major effort because it was two inches of solid concrete by today’s standards.

The images presented here are a weekly snapshot of the process and work stages. All the non-panoramic photographs can also be viewed on a special shutterfly site http://renovation2013.shutterfly.com.
This entry is the archived version, separate from the weekly progress post, so it can be organized with our other historical records for easier reference by future generations.

Join us for a special service at 7:00pm on February 13th.

Ash Wednesday emphasizes a dual encounter: we confront our own mortality and confess our brokenness before God within the community of faith in the light of God’s redeeming love. Our community of faith desires to reach out to the community that surrounds us today.

We have been filled and healed by God’s love and want to share that transformational experience with you. Each one of us has struggled with the pain and loss associated with human existence, but have found that with God we can live lives of hope. We have experienced that just as the sun eventually pulls Milwaukee out of the somber darkness of winter, God pulls us out of our mental and emotional somberness and into the light of love. That is the character of God!

The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship, and the Imposition of Ashes can be a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation. If you are not comfortable having ashes placed on your forehead, that is okay too. The physical symbol is not necessary for God. We invite you to consider using a card or small piece of paper when you return home to write down a particular behavior you want to end. You may then burn it yourself. Consider this an act of breaking from the past and starting out with a future that is clean. Those things which you wrote down are now no longer a part of you. You may just take some time to pray or meditate, focusing on confession, pardon, offering yourself to God, thanksgiving for what you have or whatever you feel comfortable with. God is ready for you!

The Summerfield UMC Sancutary renovation was documented in panoramic photographs that recorded the weekly progress.

That project captured the “big picture” and overall condition of the work, but not the smaller moments that were worth remembering.

This collection showcases the details of the renovation process.

Because no record of the original construction process was kept, it is the hope that these images will be useful for future Summerfield members in understanding the Church’s long history and generational evolution.

The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for the commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday. It culminates in the celebration on Easter Sunday of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

During Lent, many of the faithful commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penitence. But Lent is really about what we as Christians take on, not what we temporarily give up. Lent lasts for forty days, from Ash Wednesday until Easter. But Sundays are excluded it is a 46 day period.

Please join us for a special study of Lent at noon on Wednesdays, beginning February 20 and lasting for 5 weeks. A soup lunch will be provided.

Pastor Jennifer Emert will lead the sessions based on her published book, Letters From Lent. This is a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and the chance to understand the true meaning of Lent.

Everyone is welcomed to attend, no prior knowledge of Lent is required.

Rev. John G. Bissett, who served a number of churches in Wisconsin from 1958-1969, including Summerfield UMC from 1967-1969, died on Saturday, January 5, 2013. Memorials can be made to Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary or the Cedar Crest Foundation. Condolences may be sent to Shirley Bissett at 1700 S River Rd #175, Janesville WI 53546.

September 28, 1930 – January 5, 2013

John G. Bissett, 82, died peacefully Saturday evening, Jan. 5, 2013, at Cedar Crest, surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Clydebank, Scotland, Sept. 28, 1930, the son of John and Theresa Owens Bissett. In 1947, John immigrated with his family to the United States, settling in Chicago. While in Chicago, John was active in the Salvation Army. It is there that he met Shirley Wight, who would become his bride. They were married Oct. 8, 1953, in Kenosha. They served in the Salvation Army together during the early years of their marriage. John attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, IA. Shortly thereafter, he began serving several small Iowa Methodist churches as their pastor. John went on to graduate from Garrett Theological Seminary at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. John served numerous Methodist churches in Iowa and Wisconsin, during his ministry. He also served as a pastor in the United Church of Christ in Wisconsin. In 1976, he studied at Oxford while on sabbatical in Great Britain. Later in his career, he worked for his Alma Mater, Penn College. John was devoted to his family. Always ready for ‘a good yarn’, he was an avid reader and enjoyed learning—especially through his association with the University of Wisconsin. He was a member of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Advisory Board, and served in a similar capacity at UW-Rock County.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Theresa; his brother, James; and a daughter, Laurel. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley; daughter, Deborah (Robert) Maki of Elkhorn; son, David (Laurel) of Clifton Park, NY; son, Paul (Christine) of Hartford; nine grandchildren: Andrew, Kathryn, Benjamin, Matthew, Elizabeth, Rebekah, John, Daniel, and Heather; his brother, Tom (Betty) of Motherwell, Scotland; and sisters, Grace Felton of California, and Eileen Boyle of Ayr, Scotland.
The family thanks John’s doctors, the staff at Cedar Crest, and Agrace Hospice for their care and attention to John in his final days.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23

Interment will be at Green Ridge Cemetery in Kenosha.

The purpose of the church council is to plan a program of nurture, outreach, and witness; implement the plan; provide an administrative infrastructure; align the plan with the mission of the church; evaluate the effectiveness of the plan; act as the administrative agency of the charge conference.

The church council exists to create and supervise the strategic plan for your local congregation so that the congregation fulfills its mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ. This twofold function includes both leadership and management. Leadership is the visionary, “big picture” work that assesses critically where your congregation is at the present moment, where God is calling it to be in the future, and what resources will be required to move from your current reality into the desired future. Management is the essential “detail work” that must be accomplished on a daily basis to make the congregation effective.

The church council model reflects and continues a historic tradition within the Church. Jesus called twelve disciples to be together in the leadership of the early Christian movement (Luke 5:1-11, 27-32; 6:12-16). Following the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, leaders of “the Way” often convened in groups to make decisions and to support each other in the work of mission and disciple- making. Acts 15 describes the Council formed at Jerusalem. Throughout the letters of Paul, especially in Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12, leadership in the congregation is described as the shared work of spiritually graced men and women-the body of Christ. A church council is greater than the sum of its parts. Gifted individuals-knit together in faith, love, and commitment and empowered and guided by the Holy Spirit-can accomplish much more than any individual. We honor and glorify God best when we become the body of Christ together.
